Ukrainian border guards from the Mech unit of the State Border Guard Service’s Forpost Brigade destroyed 73 russian ambush drones in October, according to the brigade.
These drones are designed to lie in wait for targets along strategically important roads. They can remain stationary for hours, blending into the surrounding landscape while keeping their systems switched off.

Only the onboard camera remains active, allowing the drone to monitor the area and wait for potential targets. Once military vehicles or personnel appear within its field of view, the drone activates and attacks.
Such systems pose a particular threat because they can remain undetected until a target approaches. Their concealed positions also make identifying them from the air a difficult and dangerous task.
The drones are typically positioned near important routes, where they can threaten Ukrainian military personnel, vehicles, and logistics.
Their ability to remain inactive for extended periods makes them especially challenging to detect through aerial reconnaissance.
