According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the retaliatory strike was conducted by a coordinated effort involving the Drone Systems Forces, Special Operations Forces, and the Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with other elements of the country’s Defense Forces.
Ukrainian forces targeted multiple military facilities in russia’s Kursk region, including the temporary base of the 448th Missile Brigade. These locations were reportedly connected to those responsible for the April 13 cluster missile attack on Sumy and other war crimes against Ukraine.

The attack also caused a secondary detonation of ammunition at the base, with damage assessments still ongoing.
Ukraine’s military emphasized that every russian unit and individual responsible for attacking peaceful cities and civilians will be identified and held accountable.

“Retribution is inevitable” the statement added.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, the April 13 missile strike on Sumy involved two Iskander-M ballistic missiles launched from Voronezh and Kursk Oblasts. One of them exploded mid-air, scattering cluster munitions over the city center. The second missile hit shortly after the first — a “double tap” strike tactic that killed dozens of civilians, with most of the casualties occurring inside a trolleybus that happened to be passing the impact zone.

Meanwhile, russian media and local sources have reported a separate drone strike on the 112th Guards Missile Brigade, based near the city of Shuya in Russia’s Ivanovo region.
Although unconfirmed by Ukrainian authorities, this brigade was also implicated in the Sumy attack. It is believed to operate the same Iskander-M systems used in the April 13 massacre.
