Argentina bought some used F-16 fighter jets and now faces the need to create the infrastructure for the new aircraft

After having purchased F-16 multirole fighter aircraft, the Argentine Air Force published the specific terms and conditions of the public tender for the construction of a Training Center at the VI Air Brigade. The work is part of the preparations to the upcoming arrival of F-16s, Zona Militar reports.

According to the published documents, the official budget of the project is 3.365 billion pesos (about USD 3.6 million) and the execution time is 420 calendar days (a year and almost two months) starting once the initial agreements are finalized.

The training center refers to an additional 2,070 square meters to the general infrastructure of the brigade, the educational facilities will consist of a central room for training, two classrooms for theory and two for language training, plus libraries, offices, warehouses and other premises.

Accordingly, the construction plan is divided into three sectors:

  • sector A — four classrooms for theoretical studies, libraries, offices, etc.;
  • sector B — premises for practical training;
  • sector C — storage and machine rooms, changing rooms, etc.

Defense Express notes, earlier the Argentine Ministry of Defense announced it will need only one year and up to 15 million U.S. dollars to complete the necessary infrastructure for the F-16.

Generally, this is a fairly small financial toll, and the reason for that is the Argentine Air Force does not need to build entirely new facilities for these fighters, only to upgrade the existing ones as described above.

For a reminder, the deal on Danish F-16s for Argentina was finally signed in April 2024, after over a year of negotiations. Buenos Aires procured 24 F-16 AM/BM Fighting Falcon jets, and that commitment even cast a shadow on Ukraine's prospects of obtaining the same type of aircraft from Denmark.

The purchase of aircraft and associated weapon systems for the Argentine Air Force is partially funded with a loan provided by the United States of America.
