Multi-year, Russia has repeatedly violated international humanitarian law in Ukraine. May 31. In the captured Ukrainian city of Mariupol, the consequences of crimes committed by the Russian aggressor are much greater than the 22,000 civilians killed.

That’s according to Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boichenko, Mariupol City Council reports on Telegram.

"We estimated the death toll at 22,000 people in Mariupol. But more and more facts show that the consequences of the Ruscist crime are much worse. This and the dire state of the local population under occupation need special attention of the global community," the mayor stressed.

It is noted that 25 new trench areas have appeared at the Staryi Krym Cemetery over the past month. The bodies are placed in several layers and then "masked" with plates as individual burials.

In total, the City Council said that the invaders have buried at least 16,000 Mariupol residents in mass graves near the villages of Staryi Krym, Manhush and Vynohradne since mid-April.

Another 5,000 people were buried by municipal service by mid-March. Thousands of bodies still remain under the rubble, in natural cemeteries and in temporary mortuaries.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, journalists used satellite images to locate mass burials of Mariupol residents near the village of Manhush, in the cemetery in the village of Vynohradne and in the cemetery in the village of Staryi Krym.

May 30. Public incitement to commit genocide of the Ukrainian people is a distinct crime.

That's according to a report entitled "An independent legal analysis of the Russian Federation's breaches of the Genocide Convention in Ukraine and the duty to prevent," a summary of which was published by Ukrinform.

This report is the first to address one of the more contentious and consequential questions of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: whether the war is genocidal in character.

This is a project of the New Lines Institute and the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, which assembled three teams of experts to assess the subject. This included a team of legal scholars and genocide experts, a second group of open-source intelligence investigators, and linguists who were able to make use of the extensive primary source record this war has already created — of communications intercepts and testimonials.

The New Lines Institute and Raoul Wallenberg Centre have done extensive work on the Rohingya and Uyghur genocides — including producing the first report to make a determination of genocide in Xinjiang applying the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Researchers have concluded that Russia bears state responsibility for breaches of Article II and Article III (c) of the Genocide Convention to which it is bound.

May 30. Russian invaders are piling the bodies of the fallen Mariupol residents, which were exhumed or washed out from the ground, at a local supermarket.

The relevant statement was made by Advisor to Mariupol Mayor Petro Andriushchenko on Telegram, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“In the premises of Shchyryi Kum supermarket on Svobody Avenue, Russians set up a corpse landfill. Literally. Russians are bringing here the bodies of the fallen, which were washed out from graveyards when they attempted to restore water supply and partially those that were exhumed. They are simply piling them like waste,” Andriushchenko wrote.

In his words, there is a disastrous lack of people to carry out burial works, and even improvised morgues. Andriushchenko also posted a terrible photograph provided by the local Telegram channel, ‘Mariupol Now’.

A reminder that the Russian armed aggression caused one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in the city of Mariupol. At least 22,000 civilians were killed in Russia’s artillery and air strikes. Now the city is lying in ruins and has been left without power, water and gas supply services.

The pyrotechnics experts of the Ukrainian State Emergency Service detected and neutralized 47 explosive items in such districts of Donetsk Region as Pokrovsk, Volnovakha, Kramatorsk and Bakhmut.

Over the past day, about 1,500 civilians have been evacuated from the area of hostilities.

May 29. Kyiv Oblast Police found the body of a tortured Ukrainian near Makariv town. According to preliminary data, he was beaten to death by the Russian military.

May 28. Ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova stated that Russia continues to violate the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War. She visited the hospital with released Ukrainian service members. Here is what they told her:

• Most of the Ukrainian service members were taken prisoner by the Russians near Mariupol. At first, they were kept in basements and outbuildings, then were transferred to a pre-trial detention center in Donetsk and a correctional colony № 120. Later, our servicemen were transferred to pre-trial detention centers in Taganrog and Voronezh.
• During the transfer, Ukrainian soldiers were blindfolded, with a sack over their heads and hands tied.
• Ukrainian soldiers were tortured in captivity — threatened with murder, beaten, and humiliated.
• Torture was inflicted on officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Azov fighters. Ukrainian servicemen were brought to their knees during interrogations, beaten on the toes, and open wounds with riffle butts. Russians also used pliers on them, threw a bandage around their necks, and strangled them. In addition, they tortured Ukrainian soldiers with electric shocks, beat them with a truncheon, and kicked them.
• The Russians also injected unknown drugs signed with the letter "M" into the Ukrainian soldiers, after which they fainted and lost their memory.
• The occupiers forced Ukrainian soldiers to learn the poem "Forgive us, dear Russians," the anthem of the Russian Federation, and the history of the creation of the emblem and flag of the Russian Federation.
• Ukrainian women prisoners of war detained in the Donetsk pre-trial detention center said that there were at least 17-20 of them in the cells for 2-3 people. Instead of a bathroom — a bucket. Women were deprived of hygiene products and the opportunity to wash. They were subjected to psychological pressure — captive Ukrainian men were brutally beaten in front of them. They were also forced into sexual intercourse.
• Ukrainians were not given water, only 1.5 liters for 30-40 people, and were limited in food. In the "DNR" , their daily diet consisted of a piece of bread and lard.

It is noted that these figures are not final, as work is underway to establish casualties in places of active hostilities, in the temporarily occupied and liberated territories.

According to the juvenile prosecutors’ data, most children were affected in Donetsk region – 151, Kyiv region – 116, Kharkiv region – 108, Chernihiv region – 68, Luhansk region – 50, Kherson region – 49, Mykolayiv region – 45, Zaporizhzhia region – 28, Sumy region – 17, Zhytomyr region – 15, Kyiv city – 16.

May 27. According to the UN, more than 4,000 civilians have died since Russiaʼs invasion of Ukraine. In its latest update, the organization confirmed the deaths of 4,031 people. Actual losses are much higher.

From 4 a.m. on 24 February 2022, when the Russian Federation’s armed attack against Ukraine started, to 24:00 midnight on 26 May 2022 (local time), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recorded 8,766 civilian casualties in the country: 4,031 killed and 4,735 injured. This included:

• a total of 4,031 killed (1,529 men, 995 women, 92 girls, and 100 boys, as well as 69 children and 1,246 adults whose sex is yet unknown)
• a total of 4,735 injured (957 men, 629 women, 110 girls, and 132 boys, as well as 164 children and 2,743 adults whose sex is yet unknown)
  • In Donetsk and Luhansk regions: 4,947 casualties (2,274 killed and 2,673 injured)
    • On Government-controlled territory: 4,277 casualties (2,145 killed and 2,132 injured)
    • On territory controlled by Russian affiliated armed groups: 670 casualties (129 killed and 541 injured)
  • In other regions of Ukraine (the city of Kyiv, and Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Rivne, Vinnytsia and Zhytomyr regions), which were under Government control when casualties occurred: 3,819 casualties (1,757 killed and 2,062 injured)

May 27. Adviser to the mayor of Mariupol Petro Andryushchenko said that during the analysis of the debris on the territory of the former plant "Oktiabr" found about 70 bodies.

May 27. The head of Luhansk oblast, Serhiy Haidai, said that 4 people had died in Sievierodonetsk in a day, a police station had been shelled in Lysychansk, and about 50 houses in the region had been damaged.

May 27. The head of the Sievierodonetsk military administration, Oleksandr Striuk, said that an enemy sabotage and reconnaissance group had infiltrated the Mir Hotel yesterday, but had been repulsed by the Armed Forces.

May 27. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General's Office: Some 241 children die in Ukraine due to armed aggression of Russia, 438 children injured.

Ukraine as a result of the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation 679 children were injured in, as of the morning of May 27. The official number of dead children was 241 people, the number of injured was 438, the Prosecutor General's Office reports.

On May 21, a 7-year-old girl was injured in an attack by the occupiers of the village of Molodetske, Belozersky District, Kherson Oblast.

On May 26, the invaders again fired artillery on Kharkiv city. Eight civilians were killed. In particular, a 5-month-old boy and his father died, and a mother was hospitalized. Seventeen people were injured, including a 9-year-old girl.

A total of 1,887 educational institutions have been damaged in bombing and shelling of Ukrainian cities, towns, and villages by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. Of them, 180 are completely destroyed.

“As of May 26, 2022, over 676 children in Ukraine were affected by the Russian armed aggression. According to the data from juvenile prosecutors, 240 children were killed and over 436 injured,” the report states.

May 26. The shelling of the occupiers in Lysychansk and the suburbs killed three people and shelled a humanitarian aid center. "The enemy tried to storm our defenses near Ustynivka and at the same time destroyed this village and the nearby town of Lysychansk with artillery. May 26. Russia abducts Ukrainian children and deports them to its territory aiming to destroy the Ukrainian nation.

This is underscored in the statement of the Ukrainian delegation to the UN, read out by Serhii Dvornyk, Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN, at the UN Security Council open debate on the Protection of civilians in armed conflicts on May 25.

“Abduction of at least 230 thousand Ukrainian children, among 1.4 million of Ukrainian citizens forcibly deported to Russia, is a crime aimed at destroying the Ukrainian nation by depriving it of young generations, which is a modern manifestation of colonialism,” Dvornyk stressed, an Ukrinform correspondent reported from New York.

As noted, dozens of thousands of civilians lost their lives and many more were wounded in Russian artillery and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities. Nearly 220,000 people lost their homes.

Millions of Ukrainian citizens were forced to flee occupied or war-affected areas. 8 million have become IDPs and 6.5 million left Ukraine as refugees.

“And we have no doubt that in Russian war strategies this refugee crisis was envisaged as one of the welcoming outcomes. As well as food crisis,” Dvornyk noted.

However, he said, Russia underestimated the readiness to help Ukrainians, the hospitality and commitment of the neighbours and other friends.

Russia attacks Ukrainian civilians deliberately as a part of its Nazi-style war strategy, the diplomat noted.

“Killings, torture and illegal detention, forcible deportation, deprivation of property rights, alarming human rights violations in the occupied territories, attacks against civilian infrastructure throughout Ukraine, expropriation of grain from local farmers – this is not a complete list of Russian crimes against civilians in Ukraine,” Dvornyk stressed.

May 25. During the shelling and partial capture of Chernihiv region by Russian troops, the invaders destroyed and damaged 3,700 buildings.

"As a result of shelling and bombing, 3,700 buildings were destroyed and damaged. 3,400 of them are residential buildings. That is, the enemy aimed at houses," Head of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration Vyacheslav Chaus said during a briefing at the Ukraine Media Center–Ukrinform.

According to him, the losses due to the aggression have not been calculated yet. There are direct and indirect losses and the latter are still being counted. These are unearned profits, loss of technology, business shutdowns.

"The enemy also damaged roads. Currently, transport runs along a road which was to be repaired within the Great Construction project. Now we are not talking about major repairs, we conduct running repairs. After the water recedes on the Desna River, we will work on the restoration of the bridge in Chernihiv, which was bombed by Russian aircraft," Head of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration added.

In total, according to Chaus, more than 20 bridges in the region were destroyed. Eight of them have already been restored. Currently, the ninth and tenth are being fixed. In total, it will take another 4-5 months to complete the arrangement of temporary detours.

May 25. Russian invaders have launched a missile strike on residential neighborhoods and private buildings in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region.

According to Ukrinform, Kramatorsk Mayor Oleksandr Honcharenko said this on Facebook.

"An anxious night in Kramatorsk. An air strike on residential neighborhoods and private houses. There are no casualties," the mayor wrote.

He urged all residents who left the city for safe places to stay there and not to return to Kramatorsk now.

May 24. From 4 a.m. on 24 February 2022, when the Russian Federation’s armed attack against Ukraine started, to 24:00 midnight on 23 May 2022, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recorded 8,533 civilian casualties in the country: 3,942 killed and 4,591 injured.

“This included a total of 3,942 killed (1,489 men, 976 women, 90 girls, and 99 boys, as well as 69 children and 1,219 adults whose sex is yet unknown); a total of 4,591 injured (908 men, 603 women, 107 girls, and 128 boys, as well as 164 children and 2,681 adults whose sex is yet unknown),” reads the OHCHR report.

As noted, most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including shelling from heavy artillery and multiple launch rocket systems, and missile and air strikes.

May 24. French experts are helping Ukrainian prosecutors to record war crimes in the Chernihiv region.

That's according to the press service of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Offic.

On May 24, prosecutors and specialists from the French Gendarmerie conducted an investigation at the facilities damaged and destroyed by the Russian occupiers in the city of Chernihiv. The foreign group included explosives experts, trace evidence analysts, ballistics experts and a forensic expert.

The specialists inspected the buildings of the Shchorsh Cinema in Chernihiv. They also inspected the broken roof, damaged walls, and broken windows of the children's dental clinic, destroyed by rocket fire on February 27.

In addition to other damaged and destroyed facilities, prosecutors and French experts inspected a residential area on Chornovola Street. In March, the neighborhood came under attack from an aid raid. As a result, 15 people were killed and dozens were injured, the prosecutor's office said.

May 24. In the city of Mariupol, about 200 bodies of victims were found in a basement when dismantling the rubble of an apartment block on Myru Avenue.

The relevant statement was made by Advisor to Mariupol Mayor Petro Andriushchenko on Telegram, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“When dismantling the rubble of an apartment block on Myru Avenue, about 200 bodies of victims were found in a basement with a high degree of decomposition,” Andriushchenko wrote.

In his words, as local residents refused to collect and pack the bodies of the dead, Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry simply left corpses at the scene. As the rubble was partially dismantled, the stench can be felt all over the residential quarter.

In addition, as the so-called State Corporation Ritual from occupied Donetsk started to deal with funeral and exhumation services, the reburial of civilians who were buried in the yards of apartment blocks during hostilities actually suspended.

“For the ‘official’ free reburial, it is necessary to wait in line, bring the body of the deceased to a ‘morgue’ on your own, pretending that the body has just been found. Or, it is necessary to record a video, in which the applicant will say the deceased was killed by the Ukrainian Army. Due to such conditions, many corpses are left in bags on the street in the improvised ‘morgue’ near Metro (see the photo),” Andriushchenko noted.

According to Andriushchenko, Russian occupiers turned the city of Mariupol into a cemetery.

May 24. Prosecutor General's Office: Number of children injured amid Russia's war against Ukraine increased to over 667: Some 234 killed, 433 wounded.

More than 667 children suffered in Ukraine as a result of Russia's full-scale armed aggression: as of the morning of May 24, 2022, the official number of child victims increased to 234, and the number of injured also increased to 433, the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has said.

These figures are not final, since work is underway to establish them in places of active hostilities, in temporarily occupied and liberated territories, the PGO said.

Children suffered the most in Donetsk region, namely 146 children, while 116 in Kyiv; some 103 in Kharkiv; some 68 in Chernihiv; some 50 in Luhansk; some 49 in Kherson; some 45 in Mykolaiv; some 28 in Zaporizhia; some 17 in Sumy; some 16 in Kyiv and 15 in Zhytomyr.

On May 22, a 12-year-old girl died in a medical institution in the city of Dnipro, who was severely injured on May 7 as a result of shelling by the invaders.

On May 20, due to artillery shelling by the Russian troops of the village of Chkalovske, Chuhuiv district, Kharkiv region, a 16-year-old boy was severely injured, from which he died.

It became known that on April 8, as a result of enemy shelling of the city of Lysychansk, Severodonetsk district of Luhansk region, two boys aged 11 and 13 were wounded.

Due to the bombing and shelling of Ukrainian cities and villages by the Russian armed forces, some 1,848 educational institutions were damaged. At the same time, 173 of them were completely destroyed.

May 23. Dmytro Zhyvytskyi, head of the Sumy Oblast Military Administration, said that the Russian army had been shelling the oblast all night. The city of Bilopillia and its environs were affected.

"The Russians fired missiles from their territory, fired from the ACS, and there was an air strike around the first night. As a result, private homes of civilians were damaged, and at least 11 homes were severely damaged."

May 23. Since the beginning of the war, 663 children have been affected by Russian aggression in Ukraine. 232 children died and another 431 were injured.

"Over the past day, the Russian invaders continued to shell the city of Kharkiv and localities of the region. Five civilians were wounded in the shelling of Kharkiv’s Saltivka district. The occupiers also fired on Lozova district, the village of Shevchenkove, and Chuhuiv districts – three wounded. In Kharkiv direction, the enemy, as in previous days, is focused on maintaining the occupied frontiers and preventing further advance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he noted.

May 22. As a result of Russiaʼs armed aggression in Ukraine, 232 children died and 430 were injured, the press service of the Prosecutor Generalʼs Office reports.

May 21. Russia’s shelling of Kharkiv Region has caused 10 fires over the past day, namely in detached houses, household outbuildings, garage and infrastructure facilities. In particular, a fire broke out at the market in Kharkiv’s Kyivskyi District.

The relevant statement was made by the Main Department of the Ukrainian State Emergency Service in Kharkiv Region on Facebook, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Over the past day, rescuers have made 40 operational visits to the scene, namely 31 visits to extinguish fire (10 fires caused by shelling and 21 fires caused by other factors), five visits to carry out emergency and rescue works, five visits to provide aid to civilians and two visits for other reasons,” the report states.

The enemy’s shelling of Kharkiv Region caused fires in such districts as Chuhuiv (4), Kharkiv (3), Lozova (1), Bohodukhiv (1), and Kharkiv’s Kyivskyi District.

At 08:28 p.m., May 20, 2022, a fire call came from Kharkiv’s Kyivskyi District. The enemy’s projectile hit trade pavilions, causing a fire within an area of 1,000 square meters. A total of 10 equipment units and 60 rescuers were involved in firefighting operations. At 00:48 a.m., the fire was extinguished.

Over the past day, emergency and rescue operations have been carried out to dismantle the rubble in Kharkiv’s Kholodnohirskyi District, Industrialnyi District and Novobavarskyi District, as well as the Shevchenkove and Derhachi communities in Kharkiv Region.

The pyrotechnic experts of the Ukrainian State Emergency Service neutralized 18 enemy ammunition supplies.

May 21. A total of 232 children have been killed and 430 injured in Ukraine since the Russian invasion started. The relevant statement was made by the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office on Telegram.

“As of May 21, 2022, over 662 children in Ukraine were affected by the Russian armed aggression. According to the data from juvenile prosecutors, 232 children were killed and over 430 injured,” the report states.

These data are not final, as they are being investigated within the areas of hostilities, temporarily occupied and liberated areas.
