Analysts warn of increased drone strikes in Ukraine, but question russia’s capacity for sustained campaigns as they seek domestic alternatives to imported components

In 2023, russia has intensified its production efforts, enhancing its capacity to launch more frequent attacks on Ukraine, as reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Analysts suggest that russia’s existing inventory of drones and missiles, along with its production rates, may not be enough for consistent mass strikes. However, advancements in production capabilities and weapons stocks now empower russia to increase its drone-led assaults on Ukraine.

The Institute for the Study of War’s January 11 update discloses that from February to October 2023, russia acquired 1,400 Shahed-136/131 drones.

Despite this, analysts maintain the view that russia’s current resources may fall short for sustained mass strikes, prompting the russian government to likely focus on developing domestic components to replace foreign ones. Additionally, there is an ongoing effort to expand the production of domestic drones and missiles.
