The russian federation announced the size and number of contracts that were signed during the Army-2023 exhibition, which is a central event of the russian military-industrial complex and a place for the conclusion of a significant portion of defense contracts with domestic manufacturers.

According to the statement issued by Anatoly Gulyaev, Head of the Main Armament Directorate of the russian Armed Forces, a total of 11 state contracts were formalized and 9 were granted, amounting to a sum exceeding 400 billion rubles.

The statistics for previous years appear as follows:

  • 2020 – 1.16 trillion rubles;
  • 2021 – 500 billion rubles;
  • 2022 – 500 billion rubles;
  • 2023 – 400 billion rubles.

In terms of rubles, the year 2023 represents the smallest figure in the total value of contracts that were signed at the main arms exhibition in the russian federation.

However, considering the volatile ruble exchange rate and inflation, it would be more accurate to convert these contracts into dollars. This leads to the following statistics:

  • 2020 – $16.11 billion (based on the average exchange rate of 2020);
  • 2021 – $6.94 billion (based on the average exchange rate of 2021);
  • 2022 – $8.33 billion (based on the average exchange rate of 2022);
  • 2023 – $4.22 billion at the current exchange rate ($4.7 billion based on the average exchange rate for the first 8 months of 2023).

As a result, the actual monetary indicator of the total contract value for the Russian Ministry of Defense has decreased by four times compared to 2020, and has halved in comparison to the previous wartime year. Of course, these figures don’t encompass all of the orders of the Ministry, but the trend itself is highly illustrative.
