Tribunal for russia: PACE Proposes to Try russian Leaders and Strengthen Sanctions

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution on Wednesday, June 26, addressing "Legal and human rights aspects of the russian federation's aggression against Ukraine," which includes proposals for establishing a special tribunal for russia, as reported by the PACE press service.

In a trio of resolutions, adopted after a joint debate in Strasbourg, PACE has set out plans to try vladimir putin and his generals for aggression against Ukraine, strengthen sanctions against russia and counter its attempts to "erase" Ukrainian cultural identity.

The Assembly said a special tribunal, was now "the best feasible option, in terms of legal basis and political legitimacy" for trying russia’s political and military leadership for the crime of aggression.

The resolution also calls for the PACE to recognize the Wagner Group as a terrorist organization.

The Assembly also again urged the seizure and repurposing of russian State assets, with a view to transferring them to an international compensation fund for Ukraine.

These were “war crimes and crimes against humanity”, the parliamentarians said, underlining the need for full reparations in due course.
