Despite extensive military backgrounds, elite soldiers must undergo specialized training to tackle Ukraine’s unique combat demands

The tactics that proved effective in other conflicts are not applicable in Ukraine, according to the International Legion of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine.

In an interview with United 24, a representative of the International Legion, known by the callsign Vlad, explained that although the Legion consists of volunteers from various countries with extensive military backgrounds, including experience in previous wars, they must still undergo rigorous training before being accepted. The war in Ukraine presents unique challenges that none of them have encountered before.

“Men from elite units worldwide, such as the Green Berets, Rangers and others, join the Legion, but no one is fully prepared for this type of warfare. Everyone, without exception, undergoes specialized training, which can last for months, not just weeks,” Vlad stated.

For experienced soldiers, this training serves as a refresher, focusing on revisiting fundamentals and adapting to the new realities of the war in Ukraine.

Vlad emphasized that many of the strategies and tactics employed in wars like Iraq and Afghanistan are ineffective here. He noted that relying too heavily on past experiences or becoming overconfident in previous skills could lead to fatal consequences in this war.
