Swedish Giraffe radars help Ukrainian forces detect incoming threats and coordinate air defense responses in real time

As Ukraine continues to strengthen its air defense network against russian missile and drone attacks, the Swedish-made Giraffe radar system has emerged as one of the key assets helping Ukrainian forces detect and track aerial threats.

In a recent overview, Ukraine's Ministry of Defense highlighted the capabilities of the Giraffe family of radars, which are designed to provide rapid and accurate surveillance of airspace. Developed in Sweden, the system is widely used by NATO members and partner nations due to its mobility, reliability, and ability to operate in challenging combat environments.

The Giraffe radar is capable of detecting a broad range of targets, including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, drones, and artillery projectiles. The system can detect aerial targets at ranges of up to 100 kilometers and at altitudes of up to 20 kilometers. Its advanced sensors provide air defense operators with real-time situational awareness, allowing them to identify threats and coordinate responses more effectively.

One of the system's key advantages is its mobility. Mounted on military vehicles, Giraffe radars can be rapidly deployed and relocated, reducing their vulnerability to enemy strikes while ensuring continuous coverage of critical areas. This flexibility is particularly important in Ukraine's dynamic battlefield environment.

The radar also plays an important role in integrating various air defense assets into a unified network. By sharing target data with missile systems, command centers, and other sensors, it helps create a comprehensive picture of the air situation and improves reaction times against incoming threats.
