Near Kotliarivka, Ukraine's Stepovi khyzhaky unit proved once again how inexpensive drones can eliminate high-value enemy assets

Operators of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces have once again demonstrated the effectiveness of drones on the battlefield. Near the settlement of Kotliarivka, the 59th Separate Assault Brigade's Stepovi khyzhaky drone unit destroyed russian Mi-8 transport and combat helicopter using an FPV drone. This strike highlights how relatively low-cost systems can neutralize enemy assets worth millions of dollars.

The Mi-8 helicopter is one of the most widely used helicopters of Soviet and russian design, actively deployed in the war against Ukraine. It performs a wide range of missions: transporting troops, delivering cargo, conducting medical evacuation, and serving as a platform for close air support of ground forces. The loss of such a helicopter significantly reduces the mobility and operational flexibility of russian units in the sector.

The cost of a single Mi-8 helicopter is estimated at no less than 6 million USD, making its destruction particularly painful for russia. In contrast, an FPV drone costs only a few hundred dollars, underscoring the asymmetry in resources and the efficiency of Ukraine's approach to modern warfare.

FPV drones have become a defining element of the current war. Their ability to operate at low altitudes, maneuver with precision, and deliver explosive payloads allows Ukrainian operators to strike valuable targets such as tanks, artillery, and now even helicopters. This makes them a versatile and cost-effective weapon.

The successful attack by the Stepovi khyzhaky unit illustrates not only technological innovation but also the adaptability of Ukrainian forces. By leveraging drones, Ukraine continues to erode russia's battlefield capabilities while conserving its own resources.

Moreover, every destroyed helicopter is not just a financial loss for russia but also a blow to its logistics and troop support. With fewer helicopters available, the invaders face increasing challenges in quickly reinforcing units, evacuating casualties, or supplying forward positions.

As Defense Express previously reported, on September 27, 2025, a powerful explosion shook russian military facility in the temporarily occupied city of Melitopol, Zaporizhzhia region. The target was a secured base hidden within the local aviation town, which has long served as one of the key hubs for the occupiers in the south of Ukraine. According to official information, the special operation was carried out by Ukraine's Defense Intelligence, and it resulted in a direct and devastating strike.
