Cooperation with Diehl Defence focuses on strengthening air defense and fighter integration

Ukraine is moving to expand its air defense capabilities through deeper cooperation with Germany's Diehl Defence, focusing on missile supplies, fighter integration, and countering ballistic threats. The initiative follows high-level talks aimed at strengthening protection of Ukrainian airspace amid continued russian strikes.

According to Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, discussions with Diehl Defence leadership outlined concrete steps to scale up support. A key priority is increasing and accelerating deliveries of missiles for IRIS-T air defense system, which has already demonstrated strong performance in combat conditions.

IRIS-T system has become one of the most effective elements of Ukraine's layered air defense, particularly in intercepting cruise missiles and aerial threats. Expanding missile stocks is critical for maintaining interception rates as russia continues to rely on massed strike tactics.

Beyond ground-based air defense, the talks also addressed missile solutions for Ukraine's future F-16 Fighting Falcon fleet. Integrating advanced air-to-air and possibly air-to-ground munitions will be essential for enabling the aircraft to contribute effectively to both defensive and offensive missions.

Another area of focus is the potential testing of new defense technologies directly in Ukraine. Such an approach would allow rapid feedback from real combat conditions, accelerating the development and adaptation of systems tailored to the evolving battlefield environment.

The cooperation also includes discussions on longer-range munitions supported by the European Union, as well as the development of radar and counter-ballistic capabilities. These elements are increasingly important as russia employs ballistic missiles that challenge existing air defense systems.

Strengthening radar coverage and integrating counter-ballistic solutions would significantly enhance Ukraine's ability to detect, track, and intercept high-speed threats. This reflects a shift toward building a more comprehensive and resilient air defense architecture.
