Turkmenistan has acquired at least eight Chinese-made FK-2000 self-propelled anti-aircraft missile and gun systems, which are essentially clones of russia's Pantsir air defense systems in terms of their capabilities.
This reflects a broader trend: Turkmenistan is systematically purchasing Chinese- and Indian-made air defense systems. This is likely to further anger russia, as it loses another important arms market.

The delivery of Chinese FK-2000 systems to Turkmenistan was revealed during a military parade in Ashgabat on September 27, 2026, marking the 35th anniversary of the country's independence.
Before this delivery, Turkmenistan's air defense arsenal included 12 S-200 launchers, at least four launchers for the FD-2000 system (which is essentially a Chinese clone of the S-300), two launchers for the 2K11 Krug system, four launchers for the Chinese KS-1A surface-to-air missile system, and four launchers for the S-125 Pechora-2M.
Before the arrival of the FK-2000 systems from China, Turkmenistan's short-range air defense capabilities were represented by the S-125-2BM Pechora and S-125M1 Neva-M1 systems, with an estimated total of 12 launchers.

There were also earlier reports that Turkmenistan had purchased an undisclosed number of Indian Akash air defense systems. This already gave russia another reason for concern, as it demonstrated how India, whose defense industry grew through cooperation with russia, had begun displacing the Kremlin from its traditional arms markets.
As for Turkmenistan's motives, they may be relatively straightforward. Taking advantage of Moscow’s weakening influence, the Central Asian country appears to be shifting toward China and India, both of which are expanding their presence in what were once considered russia's traditional spheres of influence.
