Europe has announced progress on the HYDEF (Hypersonic Defense Interceptor) program to develop missile defense systems capable of intercepting hypersonic missiles. This marks the completion of the Preliminary Requirements Review (PPR) phase, which effectively concludes the first major stage of development.
According to OCCAR, this was announced during a meeting of the National Project Coordinators (NPCs), which was held at Diehl Defence's facilities. As a result, the selected concept was fully defined, including technical solutions, development plans, functional architecture, and more.

The system was confirmed to meet standards and interoperability requirements, while a life-cycle assessment was also presented. Meanwhile, all technologies required for the Block 0 (prototype) variant of the interceptor have reached at least TRL 3, which corresponds to proof of concept.
It is noted that the viability of the selected technologies was confirmed through analysis, simulations, functional tests, and other appropriate methods. Formally, the first phase of HYDEF is scheduled to end on October 22, 2026, meaning that work is proceeding slightly ahead of schedule.
From Defense Express we would like to note that the project has now finalized its concept and requirements and is moving into full-scale development. Although this is a significant achievement, it will take years to arrive at a final solution, and we may not see the results until the 2030s.
It should be noted that HYDEF is designed to intercept hypersonic cruise missiles and aircraft, as well as maneuvering ballistic missiles. For instance, this will help counter russia's missile arsenal, which includes the Iskander-M, Zircon, and Kinzhal.
Belgium, Germany, Norway, Poland, and Spain are participating in the project. The German company Diehl Defence is responsible for the project's technical management, with its IRIS-T SL family of air-defense missiles—which has performed well in Ukraine—serving as the basis for the future interceptor.
Other European projects, such as HYDIS, are at an earlier stage: the project has only recently selected the concept to be developed and is still planning to bring the necessary technologies to TRL 3. There is also the Ukrainian-European FREYJA project, whose developers at Fire Point plan to conduct the first ballistic-missile interception by mid-summer 2027.
It should be noted that most of the projects are currently in the development phase and, with the exception of FREYJA, are intended as long-term solutions.
As for the current situation, American PAC-3 MSE missiles used by the Patriot air defense system remain the primary weapon. Meanwhile, the European Aster 30 B1NT interceptor, part of the SAMP/T NG system, is set to make its combat debut in Ukraine soon. The system is designed to address the shortcomings of previous versions, which had difficulty intercepting ballistic missiles.
