President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently highlighted a concerning development in the russia-Ukraine war: the deployment of North Korean soldiers in russia’s Kursk region, which borders Ukraine. Currently, around 11,000 North Korean troops are stationed there, and some have already engaged in combat against Ukrainian forces, resulting in casualties on both sides.
This influx of North Korean troops signals what Volodymyr Zelenskyy calls a “new wave of escalation”. He warned that without increased long-range weapon support for Ukraine and heightened international pressure on russia, the number of North Korean soldiers could surge, further intensifying the conflict.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared these concerns after attending the European Political Community summit, where he urged Western leaders to take immediate action. He stressed that this is a critical moment for allies to provide Ukraine with advanced military capabilities, including long-range weapons. “If we do not employ the necessary weapons and exert political pressure on the russian federation,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “the next step could be a much greater deployment of the North Korean contingent.”
The Ukrainian president also noted that russian leader Vladimir Putin closely monitors the global response to such escalations. Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned that the current level of international reaction has been insufficient, suggesting that stronger, unified opposition is necessary to curb russia’s growing alliances and prevent further aggression.
