BM-27 Uragan system is notable for using 220 mm rockets, a relatively scarce type of ammunition. The system targeted by Ukrainian forces was also modified to use russian-produced chassis rather than its original platform.

The vehicle was additionally fitted with improvised protection intended to defend it against Ukrainian drones. However, the additional protection did not prevent Ukrainian operators from reaching and destroying the launcher.

The use of improvised anti-drone protection has become increasingly common on russian military vehicles operating near the front line. Such measures are intended to reduce the vulnerability of high-value equipment to Ukrainian unmanned systems.
