UK Has Received 8,000 Drones Since 2024, Ukraine to Get 15× More in Nine Months — Yet Nuances Remain

The examples of the United Kingdom and Ukraine demonstrate the benefits gained by countries that supply weapons to the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Since July 2024, the British Armed Forces have acquired more than 8,000 unmanned aerial vehicles as part of an investment worth over £450 million. More than £300 million of the funding was allocated to drone research and development, while approximately one-third was spent on direct drone procurement.

This is reported by the UK Defence Journal, citing responses from representatives of the UK Ministry of Defense. It is clarified that these funds do not include the supply of drones to Ukraine and are intended solely to strengthen the capabilities of the British Armed Forces.

The number of drones received by the British military over the past two years contrasts sharply with a record drone aid package for Ukraine, involving up to 120,000 units to be delivered within nine months, by the end of the year.

However, the catch is that in both cases, the drones are not being supplied exclusively by British companies. The UK Ministry of Defense has stated that it is working with more than 60 companies to supply drones directly to the British military, only 17 of which are British.

However, the share of contracts awarded to British versus foreign companies has not been disclosed, nor have other details of the contracts been released for security reasons, including which specific drones were supplied to the British military. This includes a wide range of drones—reconnaissance, logistics, long-range strike, FPV drones, and others.

At the same time, the relatively small number of drones delivered over the past two years—8,000, including FPV and deep-strike systems—may be explained by practical considerations. It may make little sense for the British military to stockpile systems such as FPV or interceptor drones, given how quickly they can become obsolete on a rapidly evolving battlefield. Instead, maintaining a limited reserve for training and operational needs may be sufficient.

On the other hand, countries that supply weapons to Ukraine benefit from a significant advantage. They have domestic companies with battlefield-proven technologies that are continuously refined, as well as production facilities that can be rapidly expanded if needed.

It should be noted that the manufacturers take into account the Ukrainian Armed Forces' operational experience with their products and make the necessary changes as well as develop new variants that will be suitable for current combat conditions.
