Seven More Gepard Guns, Sea Drones and Mi-24 Parts: Analyzing the New German Military Aid for Ukraine

The transfer of new Gepard anti-aircraft guns hints the question of ammunition supply for these systems has been solved successfully

German Federal Government has updated the list of military assistance provided to Ukraine in response to russian aggression.

According to the document, eight additional unmanned surface vessels have already arrived in Ukraine, together with 12 armored vehicles which, most likely, refers to Dingo, Mi-24 spare parts and more.

New items also appeared in the "in planning" section: seven more Flakpanzer Gepard close-air anti-aircraft artillery systems will add to the 30 received so far. Ukrainian soldiers will also receive 100,000 first aid kits.

First, we should take note of the spare parts for the Mi-24 helicopters. This item looks confusing since there should be no such equipment in a NATO country. The thing is, at the time of the German reunification in 1990, the GDR had approximately 50 Mi-24. The helicopters were in service by 1994 and then got discarded.

Shortly after, a few Mi-24 were handed over to the USA; Poland and Hungary got 18 units each. Though the spare equipment, most likely, was kept by the Germans for the last 28 years at Bundeswehr stocks, and now will help the Ukrainian aircraft park.

There is also an important detail regarding the transfer of Gepard self-propelled guns, too. This new provision indicates that the issue with ammunition supply for these systems has been solved successfully.

As a reminder, in early November, there was information of Switzerland blocking the transfer of the ammunition used by this anti-aircraft system. It even forced Berlin to make quite a powerful statement that it was ready to review all the chains of ammo supply to the Bundeswehr to get rid of all such risky elements in the future.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are using the Gepard systems against russian cruise missiles and most effective it proved against Shahed loitering munitions. There is data that it takes an average of six, maximum 10 rounds to take down one of these kamikaze drones of iranian manufacture.
