Nigerian Terra Industries founder argues dust, heat and wind demand local design as Africa's absent combat aviation makes attack drones cheap aircraft substitutes

Africa is zone of intensive various UAV type use, for illustration of which various exotic examples can be cited. Specifically, our publication in May 2026 wrote about whether Akinci drone shot down Rafale fighter for first time in history or what actually happened, or that a year earlier Belarusian-manufactured jet kamikaze drones were discovered in Congo.

Against this backdrop, particularly interesting appears material from American portal War on the Rocks, essence of which looks as follows — what UAVs must be to successfully sell in Africa, and why Ukraine experience does not always fit here.

Speaker in this case is co-founder of Nigerian defense company Terra Industries Maxwell Maduka. Generally speaking, this company began work only in 2024 and currently focuses on reconnaissance fixed-wing production, copters and attempts to create own interceptor drones.

However regardless of actually available expertise volume, mentioned speaker cites quite interesting theses that may be needed in future competitive battle for Africa market.

Specifically, above-mentioned Maxwell Maduka claims African countries are not suited for simple copying of Ukraine or Western country experience, and unmanned systems must be designed for local conditions, be sufficiently cheap and simple, and have high field repairability level.

Product design must account for African region climate specifics — constant dust, high air temperature and simultaneously strong wind.

Fixed-wing UAVs for African countries act more as cheap alternative to classic aviation, as in African countries combat aviation segment is effectively undeveloped. Considering African region logistics specifics, reliance on local UAV production and repair capabilities appears vitally necessary.

Worth separately emphasizing — in this case significance belongs not only to essence of above-described theses but also who ultimately implements all this in practice, local African manufacturers or defense companies from other world regions.
