NATO already operates five RQ-4D strategic reconnaissance UAVs and will now be augmented with MQ-4C Triton drones

During the war against Iran in April 2026, the United States lost one MQ-4C Triton UAV, and another was damaged under unexplained circumstances. However, this has not prevented Germany, Denmark, Finland, and Norway from purchasing these UAVs to strengthen their intelligence-gathering capabilities and improve monitoring of Russian activities.

Four European countries announced the purchase of American strategic reconnaissance UAVs at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkiye. It is reported that the purchase involves up to five aircraft.

The new drones are expected to significantly enhance the Alliance's intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. They will also join the NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) fleet, which is based at Sigonella Air Base in Italy.

To fulfill the order, a transatlantic consortium will be established, with Northrop Grumman responsible for manufacturing the UAV itself. Meanwhile, Airbus Defence and Space and other European companies will be responsible for the ground segment, supporting infrastructure, data management capabilities, and command-and-control systems.

From Defense Express we would like to note that despite losses during the U.S.-Iran war, the MQ-4C Triton has demonstrated its reliability since its maiden flight in 2013. Therefore, it is unsurprising that the four European countries have decided to procure the MQ-4C Triton.

The UAV was developed specifically for maritime operations and is based on the RQ-4 Global Hawk, incorporating structural reinforcements and an upgraded sensor suite. It is capable of remaining airborne for up to 30 hours and providing continuous surveillance and data collection at an altitude of over 15 km.

Currently, the NATO AGS joint fleet is already operating five RQ-4D UAVs, or Global Hawk Block 40s, which are actively used for reconnaissance and surveillance of russian actions over the Black and Baltic Seas. This means that the Alliance's new reconnaissance asset will be at least partially compatible with existing infrastructure, although the exact level of interoperability remains unclear.

The MQ-4C Triton is also designed to complement the P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft. The latter is already in service with Norway, has begun to be delivered to Germany, and has been ordered by Denmark, making the choice of the MQ-4C Triton a logical one.
