Russian forces reportedly left behind a fully operational T-72 main battle tank during a retreat after the vehicle ran out of fuel, allowing Ukrainian paratroopers to capture it intact without firing a single shot. The story was shared by the 7th Rapid Response Corps, which released details of the unusual battlefield trophy.
Fighters from the 81st Brigade recovered the tank after its russian crew abandoned it while withdrawing from advancing Ukrainian forces. The vehicle reportedly stalled when its fuel supply was exhausted, forcing the crew to leave it behind.

The T-72 tank is a particularly valuable capture because it was seized in fully recoverable condition. Rather than being destroyed in combat, the tank was simply stranded by logistical shortcomings, underscoring the importance of fuel supply in modern mechanized warfare.
After securing the vehicle, Ukrainian troops evacuated it from the battlefield and transported it to the brigade's repair company. There, technicians refueled the tank, conducted a comprehensive inspection, repaired key components where necessary, and prepared it for operational service.
The modernization process also included several upgrades designed to improve survivability on today's battlefield. Engineers installed additional anti-drone protection, reinforced the vehicle's armor to better withstand attacks by FPV drones, and adapted the tank to counter threats that have become increasingly common during the war.
Following the refurbishment, the former russian tank returned to active service with Ukrainian forces. It is now participating in combat operations on the Sloviansk axis, where it is being employed against the same army that originally fielded it.
