Egypt received the S-300VM from russia back in 2017 — but has only now chosen to show it off publicly, at the opening of the world's largest strategic command headquarters

Egypt has publicly displayed its russian S-300VM air defense systems for the first time. These are systems claimed to be capable of engaging not only aerodynamic targets such as cruise missiles, helicopters, and aircraft, but ballistic missiles as well.

The systems were presented at ceremonies marking the opening of a new strategic command headquarters covering 90 square kilometres. A Ka-52 attack helicopter, also of russian manufacture was positioned between two of the air defense system’s launchers.

Defense Express notes that this display is quite significant: it is effectively the first time Egypt has publicly shown the S-300VM in operational service since receiving the first launchers in 2017. The system had thus gone entirely unshown for approximately nine years.

The contract was concluded in 2014–2015, after which deliveries of system components began along with training of Egyptian personnel in russia. Rumours circulated about the possible acquisition of additional systems, but there is no confirmation that these materialised into firm orders.

It is worth recalling that the S-300VM Antey-2500 is distinguished by its claimed capability to intercept ballistic missiles a highly valuable function given the global scarcity of such systems.

The range of this air defense system is stated at up to 200–250 km against aerodynamic targets and up to 40 km against ballistic missiles. If it performs as advertised, Egypt would be able to protect strategic assets such as the new command headquarters, though without operational data, any assessment of real-world effectiveness is impossible.

The S-300VM is also in service with Venezuela and russia. In the russian arsenal, it has been used not only as an air and missile defense asset but also for ground strikes, including against Ukrainian civilians. Ukraine's Defense Forces have also managed to strike components of this system, which demonstrates its limitations against threats such as UAVs.

Egypt itself is now actively moving away from russian arms procurement in favour of alternatives. In the air defense domain, it has acquired the Chinese HQ-9BE, which can potentially perform all the same tasks and offers an intercept range of up to 260 km, though ballistic missile intercept capability may depend on the specific missile variant used.
