And what reserve helped Ukraine’s air defense to maintain control over the sky and thwart the russia’s plans

Yesterday, November 30, Ukraine celebrated the Day of Radio-Technical Troops of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

On this occasion, ArmyInform interviewed Brigadier General Mykhailo Donchenko, head of the Radio-Technical Troops and Special Forces Training Command of the Air Force Command of Ukraine, and he provided some interesting details regarding the combat work of the Radio-Technical Troops (RTT) after the full-scale invasion in February in 2022.

In the first hours of the full-scale war on February 24, Ukraine’s radio engineering troops were able to withdraw their units according to plan and maintain their combat potential. Russian’s conducted a constant fire attack, but despite this, Ukrainian RTT’s continued to detect enemy aircraft in the sky over Ukraine. The positions of the Kharkiv radio engineering brigade were one of the first to come under fire from russian MLRS at 5am, and at 5:20am russians launched a rocket attack on the RTT unit in Vinnytsya oblast.

The most intensively russians attacked Ukraine’s Radio-Technical Troops in the first week of the war. It was during this period that the heaviest equipment and personnel losses of Ukraine’s RTT occurred.

After the first wave of russian strikes subsided, the Radio-Technical Troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine started restoring their lost combat capability. In particular, fixing their equipment at the facilities of the domestic defense industry and directly in military units. Here, not only full-time specialists of the RTT units, but also experienced reserve specialists mobilized to the army came in handy. "As of now, dozens of radar units that were disabled as a result of enemy fire have been returned to service," ArmyInform quotes the words of Brigadier General Mykhailo Donchenko.

Another source of replenishment of equipment for Ukraine’s Radio-Technical Troops is the delivery of new and modernized radars manufactured by domestic enterprises. Ukraine’s military also received a certain number of radar stations as part of international military technical assistance.

Brigadier General Mykhailo Donchenko emphasizes that today Ukraine’s Radio-Technical Troops have a high level of efficiency that allows them to destroy up to 80% of enemy air targets. This is a very high number, considering the level of losses, especially during the first week of the war. All the more so because Ukraine’s radar operators had to learn literally "on the go" how to shoot down enemy cruise missiles and UAVs correctly.

During the 9 months of the war, Ukraine’s radars detected and accompanied more than 240,000 enemy air targets. Even RTT anti-aircraft gunners contributed to the disposal of the enemy, who destroyed about 20 cruise missiles and almost 50 russia’s drones, including Lancet and Kub loitering munitions.
