After losing the opportunity to build Germany's canceled F126 frigates, Rheinmetall is aggressively expanding into naval shipbuilding with its new export-oriented GMF 140 multi-role frigate

German defense giant Rheinmetall has unveiled its concept for the GMF 140 multi-role frigate, a warship designed to meet the requirements of NATO members and allied nations. Intended for the export market, the vessel is being promoted as capable of countering a wide spectrum of missile threats, including ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

According to Rheinmetall, the frigate will measure 140 meters in length and displace more than 6,000 tons. The ship is expected to reach a top speed of 30 knots and operate with a crew of 90 sailors, while accommodating 35 additional personnel.

Its planned armament includes anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, a 5-inch (127 mm) naval gun, a laser weapon, and a close-in weapon system (CIWS) equipped with an automatic cannon. The design also supports both hull-mounted and towed sonar systems, providing full anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

Rheinmetall also plans to integrate the U.S.-developed AEGIS combat management system, making it unsurprising that the ship's primary radar suite is expected to be sourced from the United States as well.

The centerpiece of the design is a battery of 64 vertical launch system (VLS) cells, which Rheinmetall says will be compatible with a broad range of missile types. These include surface-to-air missiles capable of engaging aerodynamic, ballistic, and hypersonic threats, as well as land-attack missiles.

From Defense Express' perspective, although Rheinmetall has not specified the exact launcher model, the most likely candidate is the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System. It supports the widest range of Western missile families, has become the de facto NATO standard, and is the natural choice for ships equipped with AEGIS.

The Mk 41 can accommodate missiles such as the SM-2, SM-3, and SM-6, while integration of the Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor is also planned. Together, these interceptors provide the capability to engage aerodynamic targets as well as ballistic and hypersonic missiles. In practical terms, a GMF 140 equipped with these weapons could help defend naval forces against russian P-800 Oniks and 3M22 Zircon missiles.

For land-attack missions, the launcher can also carry Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of approximately 1,600 km. In theory, if all 64 VLS cells were loaded exclusively with Tomahawks, a single GMF 140 could launch a salvo of 64 cruise missiles. However, it is important to note that the GMF 140 remains a concept design and has not yet entered construction.

It is worth recalling that Rheinmetall completed its acquisition of Naval Vessels Lürssen in the spring of 2026, aiming to participate in the construction of Germany's F126 frigates. However, projected procurement costs ultimately proved too high, prompting Berlin to cancel the program in favor of TKMS' F128 design while also introducing additional review procedures.

Germany is also developing the F127 air and missile defense frigate, which is expected to feature up to 96 VLS cells for surface-to-air and cruise missiles while also employing the AEGIS combat system.

Based on those plans, it is reasonable to assume that the GMF 140 could adopt a similar architecture, including the AN/SPY-6(V)1 primary radar, the AN/SPQ-9B horizon-search radar, and associated combat systems. Likewise, following the configuration of the F126, the frigate could be armed with Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) for anti-ship warfare, although Rheinmetall will almost certainly tailor the final weapons package to each customer's specific requirements.
